So how can Samsung raise the bar with the Galaxy S3? In October the first Samsung Galaxy S3 details leaked including a dual core 1.8GHz CPU with 2GB of RAM.

Now we might have just caught a glimpse of the Galaxy S3 for the first time in one of Samsungs promotional videos that was in use at CES. Samsung used the video throughout their press conference which shows an unknown mobile device.

You can see the unidentified device in the image above, and there are some rather noticeable differences between this and the Galaxy S2. The first thing that jumps out is how narrow the bezel is around the edge of the screen. It is not far from been completely surface to surface which is supported by rumours that Samsung have developed an all new Super AMOLED display specifically for the Galaxy S3.

Now this doesn’t mean that the unknown handset is even a real product. It could be just a mock model purely used for promotional purposes when filming the video. Although you have to ask yourself why they would build a working prototype for something that is only featured in the video for a couple of seconds. The only thing that does look a little bit off is how the corners of the screen are slightly rounded which is something you don’t usually see. This could suggest that a dummy model was used and the screen you use was pasted over the top in post production.

The image was sent to Phandroid anonymously and it does look like the type of internal presentation slide that gets produced for networks and distributors.

Looking at the image it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S3 is going to feature a dual core 1.8 GHz Exynos 4212 processor with 2GB of RAM. That will certainly put some pressure on HTC’s dual core 1.5 GHz processor in the HTC Sensation XE.

The design has also significantly changed which could be a reaction to the loss in Apple’s recent legal battles over patents and design. However it will be thinner than the Galaxy S2 which is incredible to say the least.

There will also be a 12 megapixel camera and a 4.6″ Super AMOLED Plus HD display providing the perfect stage for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The HD resolution of the display alone could be a game changer for Samsung.

Although the leaked image could be a hoax and there are a couple of minor errors (common in slides like this anyway) it does some plausible that Samsung will be stepping their game up in response to the iPhone 4S. Although the Galaxy S2 did just win the phone of the year award.

It’s not really surprising to see a handset that has sold many units take the tops spot for phone of the year. Although let’s face it, looking at the handsets it was up against it was pretty obvious which one was going to win.

The Galaxy S2 was released in May and the only real competitor amongst the bunch was the iPhone 4 released a year earlier than the Galaxy S2. It would be interesting to see how the Galaxy S2 stacked up against the HTC Sensation XE and iPhone 4S.

To be honest there would be no competition; it would be between the Sensation XE thanks to its dual core 1.5 GHz processor or the iPhone 4S because of its amazing graphics performance.

Either way, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a fantastic handset and is beautiful to use. The dual core 1.2 Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM keep the handset chugging along very smoothly, and it’s just drop dead gorgeous to look at!

Stunning In Black

The Galaxy S2 is an absolutely beautiful piece of technology. Everything about it just screams elegance and desirability, and that’s before you have even held it in your hand!

One of the most striking things you will notice about the handset is its size. It is amazingly thin – 8.49mm to be exact which really makes you wonder how they managed to fit everything in!

The huge 3.7inch display helps set the stage for a wonderful Android experience. In fact, the display is quite easily one of the best screens I have ever seen on a mobile phone. The colours are rich and vibrant and it almost looks too good to be real. Pictures and video do not do the screen justice; it really is something you need to see for yourself to fully appreciate.

Power Packed Hardware

The real power of the Galaxy S2 comes from its blazing fast processor. In fact, nothing else on the market even comes close to the dual core 1.2 GHz and 1GB ram combination of the S2. It wasn’t that long ago that my home computer had a single core 1 GHz processor and now you can get more than double that power in your pocket!

The meaty specification ensures that the device never suffers from any lag or delays when jumping through menus and applications. If you have ever bought a budget Android handset you will know how annoying this can be. The Galaxy S2 provides a fast and fluid user experience throughout whether you’re watching a video or playing a 3D game.

Another feature I was very impressed with is the camera. A few years back I had a Sony Ericsson Cybershot K800i which had a 3.2MP camera on board which produced beautifully clear images and never blurred. Ever since then I have always been disappointed with cameras on handsets and nothings come close to it, but the Galaxy S2 has finally topped it!

It features an 8 megapixel camera which in my testing has produced some wonderfully vibrant and detailed images, even in low light conditions where other mobile cameras seem to struggle. There are also a range of advanced features such as smile and blink detection, and there is literally no shutter lag when you take a picture either. Oh, did I forget to mention that it can also record video in full 1080P HD.

Of course there are the usual features that have become a standard over the past couple of years such as Wi-Fi and GPS. Bluetooth on the other hand has been upgraded to Bluetooth 3.0 which will make data transfers much quicker.

If you don’t know what the Samsung Galaxy S2 is, then you must have just woken from a coma. Samsung have taken Android and the entire mobile phone industry to a new level with the release of the Galaxy S2 this year.

A Closer Look At The Hardware

A Striking Look

The first thing you will notice about the Samsung Galaxy S2 is how big and beautiful the display is. Measuring at a respectable 3.7 inch’s images and video literally come alive thanks to the bright vividness of the colours. Samsung have also invested in protecting the glorious display by coating it with Gorilla Glass.

Until you hold this handset in your hand, you don’t truly appreciate the level of engineering expertise that has gone into the device. They have packed all of this into a device that measures just 8.49mm in thickness. I’m still scratching my head at how they have managed to pull it off, but it only weighs 116 grams and fits nicely in the pocket.

Google Android has gone from strength to strength since its initial release, and the Galaxy S2 comes with the latest version 2.3 Gingerbread. The 2.3 update has introduced some new features as well as improved overall performance and battery life.

Google have take it upon themselves to make some improvements to the touch screen keyboard. Listening to users feedback the keyboard has a new design making it easier to use with less typing errors.

The biggest changes are deep in the inner workings of the system though, as Google have made significant improvements to performance. This gives user a faster more responsive interface while taking less toll on the battery.

In fact, Samsung provide some of the most important components needed to build the iPhone 4. Everything from the flash memory that is used for internal storage of photos, music and apps, the DRAM and even the applications processor which is what makes the whole phone actually work.

In a press release, Samsung have confirmed they will be releasing an NVIDIA Tegra 2 powered handset called the Samsung Galaxy R.

The NVIDIA Tegra 2 is a dual core processor featuring a dedicated 8 core graphics processor. It offers fast performance while drawing minimal power from the battery. Hardware accelerated graphics will help bring console like graphics to the handset. The Tegra 2 is considered to be the most powerful mobile processor on the market, well until the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 gets released anyway.

Essentially this handset is modelled on the hugely successful Galaxy S2 but with an added NVIDIA kick. Here’s a full run down of the Samsung Galaxy R specifications-

A couple of weeks ago we revealed all the juicy details of the leaked Google Nexus 4G. One of the details we didn’t know at the time was who the manufacturer of the handset would be; we had our money on Samsung.

Today a Samsung employee on their Romanian twitter account accidently slipped up and confirmed that Samsung would be the manufacturer of the Google Nexus Prime. The roughly translated tweet reads-

The production will be started now, most likely [to arrive] in late 2011. It [Nexus 3] will bring Android 4.0 on the market.

Although it isn’t concrete, it would be odd for Samsung to post details about a handset it isn’t manufacturing. To try and cover up the leak, the Samsung Mobile Romania PR team responded to the tweet with-

Hello! It’s about a discussion around the rumour of releasing the new Nexus. We haven’t got any official info

I’m not really sure that clears anything up, but the fact that they deleted the original Tweet does suggest it should not have been posted at that time.

The Google Nexus Prime is shaping up to be a great handset; it will be the first device to run Android Ice Cream and features the dual core OMAP4460 CPU which is capable of running at up to 1.5GHz.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has taken the mobile phone world by storm since it’s release in May. In fact before it even went on sale the handset had received over 3 million pre-orders. It is the most powerful smartphone available on the market today with a staggering 1.2ghz dual core CPU.

Samsung has now announced that it has come good on those pre-order sales and has broken their own sales records, shifting over 3 million units in just 55 days. To put that is perspective for you, Samsung are selling over 50,000 Galaxy S2 units every single day or roughly 35 a minute.

What is remarkable though, is the Galaxy S2 hasn’t even been launched in the USA yet which will be sure to see millions more of them sold. The original Galaxy S sold 10 million units; it won’t be long until the Galaxy S2 smashes that figure!

We could be seeing a new version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 in the next couple of months.

When the handset was originally announced at Mobile World Congress 2011, it featured a 1Ghz processor. After the handset was announced Samsung bumped this up to 1.2Ghz and now we could be seeing a 1.4Ghz version of the Galaxy S2.

The new version of the handset has been dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus and we could be seeing it sometime in September. It is thought that Samsung will be looking to counter the launch of the iPhone 5 with their updated handset.

There have previously been rumours that Samsung were preparing a version of the Galaxy S2 with NFC support. Although NFC support hasn’t been mentioned in the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus it wouldn’t surprise us if Samsung included this to compete with Apple.

This upgrade could upset a lot of current customers though, the Galaxy S2 has only just launched and already Samsung are planning to replace it. On the other hand is there really a need for the extra speed in the CPU? The Galaxy S2 is already the fastest Android based device available and it has no problems with 3D games. If anything, this will just hurt the battery life for no real gain.

We anticipated that the Galaxy S 2 would be the biggest handset this year (it’s also the most powerful) but with over 3 million handsets across 120 countries sold before release it looks like the Galaxy S 2 is going to shatter our anticipations.
