The Blackberry Torch 9810 is the follow up the hugely successful Blackberry Torch 9800 which was launched last year. Although the handsets look nearly identical (they both have the same dimensions and weight) there have been a number of improvements throughout the internal hardware of the phone.

Firstly the display has been upgraded to display 640×480 pixels allowing for crisp and sharp images. Both the processor and available RAM have been upgraded as well to 1.2 GHz and 768MB RAM respectively. The Liquid Graphics engine provides dedicated graphics processing as well.

You will find a full slide out QWERTY keyboard and a 5 megapixel camera that can record HD video, along with advanced features like image stabilisation and face detection.

QWERTY Convenience

In true Blackberry style, the Curve 9360 offers a full hardware QWERTY keyboard. The keys all sit separately from each other making it easy to type on, unlike the keyboards found on the Bold range which I personally find difficult to use.

The keyboard is nice and responsive and reminds me of the speed and convenience my 8900 Curve used to offer me. If you tap out text messages or emails on your phone having a keyboard like this is crucial. The keyboard really adds to the overall user experience and makes communication a breeze, certainly better than those annoying touchscreen keyboards anyway!

The Blackberry Diet

Blackberry have spent some time slimming down the Curve 9360 to make it more pocket friendly. Measuring just 11mm in thickness the handset looks very sleek and elegant from every angle. Overall this handset comes in at 109 x 60 x 11mm which fits really well in the hand.

What shocked me about the handset was how light it was, I was expecting it to be much heavier when I first picked it up. The handset only weighs 99 grams which makes it feel light as a feather compared to other high end smartphones.

Processing Power

Upgraded Hardware Specification

Stand Out From The Crowd

When I saw the original Touch, I fell in love with its clean and stylish design. There isn’t that much difference between the 9800 and 9810 in terms of external design. They both measure 111 x 62 x 14.5mm and weigh 161 grams.

What does makes a huge difference is the all new display on the Blackberry 9810. The screen is beautiful to look at and colours appear vibrant. It almost looks too good to be real, but Blackberry have managed to squeeze 640×480 resolution into the 3.7 inch display.

This is one of the best screens I have seen on any handset; pictures and video just do not do it justice. If you pickup this handset, the first thing you should do is playback a high quality video and watch as your jaw hits the deck.

Let’s start by jumping in at the deep end and taking a look at the hardware specification of the Torch 9860. As I’ve already mentioned the handset has the fastest processor ever seen in a Blackberry clocking in at 1.2 GHz. There is also a huge 768MB of RAM available to help make sure everything runs smoothly without any menu lag.

This kind of processing power is important in a modern smartphone. Many of us have multiple applications running at any one time which can cause the phone to slow down and be unresponsive which is frustrating to say the least. The Torch 9860 won’t suffer from any of those problems thanks to its nippy processor and large amount of available RAM.

Another first is the display – the largest screen ever seen on a Blackberry measuring at 3.7inch’s. Blackberry have been announcing new handsets thick and fast recently, and they have just made the Blackberry Curve 9360 official as well.

Like all of Blackberry’s new handsets the new Curve 9360 will feature Blackberry OS7. The brand new OS brings a range of new features and improvements into play and I have been very pleased with how the system fits together.

In the hardware department, the Curve 9360 will feature a 800mhz CPU, NFC, 5MP camera, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth in a rather compact 109 x 60 x 11 mm weighing just 99 grams.

As a previous Curve 8900 owner I’m quite excited by the 9360. The 8900 was one of the best handsets I have ever owned; the only drawback to it was it didn’t have 3G at the time. The 9360 looks to have taken everything that made the 8900 great, and improved on it! The ultra slim design looks very slick if you ask me.

Designed With Class

To the passing eye, the Blackberry Torch 9860 might look like yet another Android handset. Look a bit closer and you will see some of the traditional Blackberry buttons including call answer/reject, back and the Blackberry button.

What is strange though is that there is an optical trackpad as well. With a touch screen that big I’m not sure why you would use an optical trackpad and really isn’t needed.

The good news is that Blackberry has managed to keep the unit quite trim and slim. Coming in at 120 x 62 x 11.5 mm and weighing 135 grams with the battery, it will sit in your pocket comfortably while been easy to use and hold in the hand.

Impressive Hardware

Blackberry haven’t held back on the hardware either! Under the hood you will find a 1.2 GHz processor which makes the handset very nippy and responsive while in use. There is also 768MB of ram on board which helps make sure jumping between applications and functions is fluid without delay.

The 3.7inch screen (which is the biggest on a Blackberry yet) is beautiful to look at though, it looks bright and colourful and even does will in direct sunlight. I have always been impressed with the clarity of Blackberry displays and it’s great to see that carried through with the Torch 9860.

The hardware doesn’t stop there. You will also find a 5MP camera with HD video recording capability, 4GB of storage which is expandable via MicroSD, WiFi, digital compass, accelerometer and a range of other sensors.

All New Platform

The underlying operating system of Blackberry handsets has built a solid reputation for been reliable and secure while remaining easy to use. This alone has been a huge selling point for Blackberry handsets in the past, and recently they have lost market share to new platforms such as Android.

Blackberry are looking to fix that with the introduction of Blackberry Os7. The new OS is just as slick and easy to use as previous versions, but with a range of improvements.

The user interface has been redesigned and looks very slick to say the least, but previous Blackberry owners will feel right at home with the new look. There are lots of new features to explore as well, such as the universal search which gives you a one stop interface to search all of your contacts, social networks, text messages, files, emails and more.

Blackberry Balance is a feature that will be appreciated by anyone who uses the phone for business. With Balance you will be able to separate personal from work and switch modes easily. I was a bit dubious about this feature at first, but after playing with it for a while it really is a god send.

I could write a book about the changes in Blackberry OS7 there are that many, however after spending some time with the OS I have been very pleased with it!

The only drawback at the moment is the lack of apps available, but this will only be an issue for the next couple of months as developers play catch up.

The Blackberry Torch 9810 gives users the best of both worlds. It features a large touchscren making the phone easy to navigate and a hidden hardware QWERTY keyboard so you can tap out messages in record time. I’m one of those people that hates touchscreen phones, typing on them is frustrating to say the least, which means there are only a handful of handsets on the market that cater to my personal taste. You could say that the Blackberry Torch 9810 is right up my street!

Design

The handset is a revamped version of the original Torch with a range of improvements to both the software and hardware. Dimensions wise they are exactly the same and both come in at 111 x 62 x 14.5mm weighing 161g.

The 3.2 inch display helps set the stage for Blackberry OS7 (more on that later) and manages to cram 640×480 pixels into the display at 253 pixels per inch. This helps to create a very vivid and bright display which makes using the handset a fantastic experience.

As well as using the large touchscreen to direct the action, there is also the optical trackpad which replaced the classic Blackberry trackball when the 8520 was released.

As I’ve already said, the Blackberry Torch 9810 also has a hidden slide out QWERTY keyboard. Blackberry are renowned for the keyboards they create for handsets and the Torch 9810 is no exception to that. The keyboard is easy to use and makes writing messages a breeze. Seriously, who actually likes using a touchscreen keyboard?

Hardware

Specifications wise, the Torch 9810 features a 1.2 GHz processor along with 768MB of RAM. That makes it twice as quick as the original Torch! There is also dedicated graphics processing with the Liquid Graphics engine.

On the back of the handset is a 5 megapixel camera complete with flash. Keeping with the times, the camera is also capable of recording HD video. They have also thrown in a few nice touches to the camera such as face detection and image stabilisation.

There is also 8GB of internal storage for all of your photos, videos and music and if that’s not enough there is a MicroSD card slot to expand on memory.

Let’s not forget the usual toys that are found on most smartphones now such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and an array of sensors including a digital compass, proximity sensor and light sensor.

Meet Blackberry Os7

The handset will also be one of the first to show off the brand new Blackberry OS7. This is the quickest and most advanced Blackberry operating system to date and brings a host of new features into play.

Overall the new OS is much quicker and easier to use, the design and layout is very polished and pleasing to the eye. If you haven’t used a Blackberry before you will have no problems getting to grips with the phone, and previous Blackberry users will feel right at home. Universal search will search all of your text messages, social network updates, contacts, emails and more making it easy to find what your look for.

The new version of Blackberry App World looks to rival Apples App Store and the Android Market. Developers are already branching out to port apps over to the new Blackberry OS so expect a huge burst in the amount of apps available in the coming weeks.

A couple of the most interesting features though is the integration of Blackberry ID and Blackberry Balance. Blackberry ID will serve as a single account to manage your phone that can be accessed via the handset or a computer. If you ever lose your device or upgrade to a new model, transferring all of your contacts and important information will be a breeze.

Blackberry Balance will help to separate your work life from your personal life. I’m sure anyone who owns a Blackberry for business purposes will appreciate this feature. Who wants to be reading emails from work at 9pm at night?

There are literally hundreds of improvements, but overall the new OS is a huge step in the right direction and is fantastic to use!

Although we have no word on pricing yet, we could be seeing the handset get released in the UK across the coming week or so.

In case you missed the original post, the Blackberry Torch 9810 (Torch 2) will feature the brand new Blackberry OS7. The new system is a much needed update and helps deliver cutting edge features while remaining fast and fluid.

The Torch 9810 will also include a 1.2Ghz processor at its heart with some help from the 768MB of RAM that is available as well. There is also a 5 megapixel camera that has been producing some very impressive shots and is also capable of recording video in 720P HD.

All of this is displayed on a high resolution 3.2″ touchscreen display, and let’s not forget the dedicated hardware QWERTY keyboard that slides out from the back!

The Torch 9810 is one of the highest specced Blackberry’s we have ever seen and with the arrival of the new OS as well, we are certainly in for a treat. They certainly have a lot riding on this new range of handsets with sales slowing as they take a brutal beating from Android and iOS devices.

When Blackberry Os7 was first announced, it was also confirmed that it would only be available for new models. At that point the Blackberry Torch had recently been released, and loyal Blackberry Torch owners were not best pleased that there shiny new handset was already out date. Let’s not forget, Blackberry OS 6 was launched less than a year ago in August 2010 so you can understand why customers were not happy.

Blackberry justified this with the simple fact that Blackberry OS7 needs a 1.2Ghz processor and older handsets simply couldn’t handle the demands of the new OS.

When I first read that, I thought fair enough (although if I had just bought a Blackberry Torch that might have been different) Blackberry are in a transitional phase at the moment which can make it difficult to deal with legacy products especially if they can’t handle the demands of the all new OS.

They are also taking a solid beating from Google and Apple at the moment and need to do something drastic to recover market share, and a modern OS is desperately needed.

So how is it, that to support their mid-range efforts they have managed to get OS7 working on the Blackberry Curve Touch 9380 which only has an 800Mhz CPU if OS7 needs a minimum 1.2Ghz processor to run?

Have Blackberry lied to all of their loyal customers and decided too force them into buying new devices to recover from the iOS/Android beating they have taken? Or are they going to deliver a slow and sluggish user experience with the Curve Touch 9380?

Let’s be clear, the specifications of the curve touch 9380 haven’t been officially confirmed by Blackberry, but at the moment it looks like if you have been a loyal Blackberry customer over the years, you’re about to take one for the team.

At first glance the blurry image might have you fooled! No it’s not the recently announced Blackberry Torch 9860; it’s the Blackberry Curve Touch 9380.

Although the full details haven’t been officially announced yet, we do know a few things about Blackberry’s upcoming handset.

Introducing The Blackberry Torch 9810

The Blackberry Torch 9810 (earlier leaked as the Monza) features a 1.2ghz processor with 768MB of ram and NFC support. Like the original Blackberry Torch the handset has a slide down QWERTY keyboard. It will run on the all new Blackberry OS7 which brings a host of new features.

It has a 5 megapixel camera that is capable of recording 720P HD video. The 3.2″ display runs at a high resolution which will ensure images and video look crisp and sharp. Check out the Blackberry Torch 9810 deals page for more details.

Introducing The Blackberry Torch 9860

Like the 9810, the Blackberry Torch 9860 will also feature a 1.2ghz processor, 768MB of ram, NFC support and Blackberry OS7. However the Torch 9860 is purely a touch screen device without the classic hardware Blackberry keyboard.

It will feature a large 3.7″ display which is the largest screen ever seen on a Blackberry handset. This will help improve the Blackberry user experience which in the past has been a bit tricky due to the small screens. We have a full review on our Blackberry Torch 9860 deals page.

Blackberry also announced the Blackberry Bold Touch 9900 at the event as well, but we have already published a lot of coverage about that handset.

The good news is that all the handsets will be available within the month worldwide; we’ll keep you up to date with pricing and release dates as we get it.

Now a bunch of online retailers including Play and Clove are claiming the Blackberry Bold Touch will be released on the 12th of August. The sim free model is priced at £519.99 which is a bit on the expensive side if you ask me.

Luckily a number of networks have already confirmed they will be ranging the handset so you should be able to pickup the handset free of charge with a Blackberry Bold Touch contract deal when they are available.

The Bold Touch is Blackberrys thinnest handset to date measuring just 10.5mm thick. It also packs a 1.2ghz processor which is another first for the Blackberry range of handsets. It will be the second device to feature the brand new Blackberry OS7 software update. All of which will be splashed across a 3.7inch WVGA display. There will also be a 5 megapixel camera capable of recording video in 720P HD.

Although we don’t have a concrete launch date, I would expect this to launch around the same time as the Blackberry Bold Touch UK release date which is currently set as September 15th.
