The Motorola Milestone (Droid in USA) is the follow up to the Motorola DEXT has been regarded as the best Android handset to date, and is set to be released in the UK this week. And if anyone is following me on twitter they will know how excited Iam about the handset!

Unfortunately many networks have chosen not to range the handset as part of their contract offerings before Christmas, and O2 and T-Mobile both tested and rejected the handset earlier this year.   However Expansys have secured an exclusive on the Motorola Milestone Sim Free and will recieve stock on the 4th December and make it available to customers on the 7th at a price of £449.99.  It is already listed on the expansys site for pre-order

Stay tuned because im sure availability will increase over the coming weeks!

Sony Ericsson Satio And Aino Recalled

Posted by Richard On November - 26 - 2009

sony-ericsson-logoThe Sony Ericsson Satio and Aino were Sony Ericssons flagship handsets on the run up to christmas supported by a huge marketing campaign when they were launched in October this year.

However, Sony Ericsson was forced to pull the high end Satio handset due to high levels of returns at both Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u.

And the trouble doesn’t end there for Sony Ericsson as they have now had to pull its second handset this week, the mid-range Aino due to software issues.

This is a shame, and just follows Sony Ericssons current market trend of recalling products, last year alone they had to recall the K850i, W910i and C902 due to crashing and software issues.  As a former Sony Ericsson fan boy myself, I have never bought and never will buy another Sony Ericsson handset since the K850i.

Sony Ericsson seem capable of building solid handsets, but just cant handle the software side of things anymore with the fast advancements of the mobile phone industry.  Who knows, Android might be there saviour, it certainly is for Motorola.

Hands On The Nokia N900

Posted by Richard On November - 16 - 2009

The much hyped Nokia N900 has been discussed frequently with its release just around the corner. This is the first Nokia tablet that will also function as a mobile phone, and it has seen huge improvements from its predeccessor the Nokia N810.

Nokia N900

Nokia N900

The biggest change though is the introduction of the Maemo 5 operating system, based on Linux which looks to rival Google Android. The guys ovewr at my-symbian.com have written a very detailed hands on preview which can be read here

If you dont want to run through 4 pages, mobiletechworld.com summed it up quite nicely-

What’s hot:

  • VERY high performance: powerful OMAP3430 processor, hardware gfx and video acceleration, lots of operating memory
  • rock stable
  • great, high quality WVGA screen (I wouldn’t mind it being capacitive, but it’s responsive enough for it not to be an issue)
  • fully functional as a mobile phone, well integrated with the rest of the system
  • all connectivity options one could think of
  • fast and stable 3G/HSDPA connectivity
  • great, fully integrated support for VoIP, e.g. Skype
  • BEAUTIFUL user interface, powerful, intuitive, easy to use
  • advanced home screen: four separate desktops, support for widgets, fully customizable
  • both stylus and finger friendly control
  • Calendar, Contacts, Office suite finally present on Maemo (compared to previous Tablets) and more advanced than on S60 phones
  • GPS receiver is very fast and sensitive, much faster than on S60 phones (except for the Omnia HD)
  • high quality camera and video recording
  • hardware keyboard
  • good and fast web browser, compatible with virtually all websites I tested it with, fully supporting Flash (and all kinds of Flash videos), Ajax, Javascript, etc.
  • fantastic video playback, crisp and smooth.

windows-phone-pirate-rm-engMicrosoft updated its windows marketplace yesterday to bring some new features and functionality to its users, and also added in a new layer of anti piracy to stop people ripping off applications.

But in true Microsoft fashion, it took a member of the xda-developers community less than 2 hours to crack the new anti piracy code.  Although they are not going to release the hack to the public, you can pretty much guarantee more than 1 person has worked it out.

Chainfire went on to explain-

I have now cracked the “advanced” copy protection used by Marketplace. As you may know, this is a “better” protection than the original “CAB copy protection” Marketplace offered. This “advanced” protection uses license keys that are verified when you run the application, and given out and controlled by Microsoft.

Several developers are annoyed that Microsoft does not allow us to use our own licensing schemes, and are forced to use “no protection” (the original CAB copy protection) or use Microsoft’s scheme which is essentially a single point of failure for all Marketplace protected apps.

This new “advanced” protection was released today by Microsoft, and as far as I know no app available already uses it at the time of this writing.

So I got the code snippets you are supposed to put in your app and it was simply jawdroppingly WTF. While it was not exactly easy to beat, it took me less than two hours to devise a “generic” hack, without modifying any files on the device. (Well hey, at least it’s better than the 5 minutes it took for the “basic” protection, right?)

A “generic” hack? Yes, by this I mean that this single hack (actually, running an EXE in the background) will completely bypass the entire code snippet provided by Microsoft that is supposed to check and validate your license code, for all Marketplace apps that use this “advanced” protection.

Orange And T-Mobile Finalise Merger

Posted by Richard On November - 6 - 2009

France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have both announced today that they will merge there UK operations to become the biggest UK mobile phone network.

The deal is currently under review by the regulatory authorities which should be completed in the first half of 2010

Orange & T-Mobile Joint Venture

Orange & T-Mobile Joint Venture

Timotheus Höttges, Deutsche Telekom CFO said:

‘This joint venture is based on the full commitment of Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom to a long-term partnership.

‘The negotiations were conducted in a fair way on both sides and I am certain that this spirit of professionalism and partnership will shape the future of our joint venture. It will set new standards as the number one in the UK mobile market.’

It will be interesting to see how this pans out for current customers of both Orange and T-Mobile. And what will the knock on effect be for general consumers? Is this going to reduce competition and encourage industry wide price rises?
